AI-enhanced laptops include a dedicated Neural Processing Unit (NPU) or on-device AI accelerator ā alongside the CPU and GPU ā built specifically to run machine-learning tasks locally: real-time video/audio enhancement, background noise removal, on-device image generation, local language-model assistants, and extended battery life during AI workloads. This is different from a laptop that simply runs cloud-based AI software; the defining feature is dedicated on-device AI hardware.
What to check before buying
- A named on-device AI chip/NPU (e.g., Intel Core Ultra with NPU, AMD Ryzen AI, Apple M-series Neural Engine, Qualcomm Snapdragon X)
- NPU performance rating in TOPS (trillions of operations per second) ā higher supports more demanding local AI tasks
- RAM (16GB+ recommended for local AI models) and fast SSD storage
- Battery life under sustained AI workloads, not just idle use
What makes a laptop "AI-enhanced" rather than just fast?
A fast CPU can run AI software, but an AI-enhanced laptop has purpose-built hardware (an NPU) that runs AI tasks more efficiently and with far less battery drain than doing the same work on the CPU or GPU alone.
Do I need an NPU if I only use cloud AI tools like ChatGPT?
No ā cloud-based AI tools run on remote servers, so any laptop with a solid internet connection can use them. An NPU matters specifically for offline/local AI features, such as on-device transcription, local image generation, or AI features that work without internet.
